What is a physiotherapy session like?
No physiotherapy session is the same, it will vary based on your goals of therapy and unique treatment plan. Every physiotherapy session is unique and modeled after your needs and your health condition. But a typical physiotherapy session in OAK Physio & Wellness may involve:
A complete assessment of your condition to determine your specific needs
Our expert physiotherapists will create a complete treatment plan designed for your needs whether reducing pain, improving range of motion, preventing injury, adjusting posture, or ensuring your overall well-being. The contents of the customized treatment plan will take into account several factors, most of which are regarding your lifestyle choices, your daily activities, and of course, your health in general.
Aside from a treatment plan, we also create a personalized and effective prevention plan. Which involves all that is entailed in the treatment plan but meant for prevention.
A physiotherapy session in OAK Physio & Wellness can involve the prescription of assisting devices or exercises which can be used to improve the recovery process.
Is physiotherapy painful?
Physiotherapy should not be painful, however, depending on the condition and your pain tolerance level, you may experience a certain degree of pain. During the initial sessions, some exercises and stretches may cause very slight discomfort. Over time this should subside, and it is important to work closely with your physiotherapist to adjust the treatment plan to ensure you are feeling your best and achieving optimal results.
Are there any side effects of using physiotherapy?
A key goal of physiotherapy is to increase the range of motion and reduce pain. It also helps you heal from injuries or relieve medical conditions. An example of side effects could be discomfort or tiredness from the exercises. Please work with our physiotherapists to adjust your exercises or treatment if you experience any discomfort.
Do I need a doctor's referral for physiotherapy?
No, you don’t. Physiotherapy is regarded as primary care. And as such, no need for a doctor’s referral. But sometimes your insurance may need a referral for reimbursement of your physiotherapy treatment.
What should I wear for a physiotherapy session?
Loose-fitting clothes are ideal to allow for you to move freely when performing stretches or exercises. Loose-fitting clothing will also allow for our physiotherapist at OAK Physio & Wellness to better evaluate your concerns and provide manual treatment.
How long are the physiotherapy sessions?
Sessions can range from 15 to 90 minutes pera visit, although this depends on your conditions and unique treatment plan.
How many visits do I need?
The number of visits you need is dependent on your condition or goals of treatment. It may range from weeks to months of care. Ultimately, this will be determined with you and your physiotherapist depending on your treatment plan.
After physiotherapy treatment, what next?
This is also depending on your condition, goals of therapy and treatment plan. You may need to continue independent exercises and stretching at home or at the gym. Ideally, we will have you returning to your normal routine activities. You will work with our expert physiotherapists at OAK Physio & Wellness to determine the appropriate next steps.

Jeannine has worked with a variety of sports teams, treating many different injuries along the way. She has experience working in acute and chronic conditions. She has extensive knowledge and ability for utilizing taping techniques and exercise prescription for return to play.
Alex graduated with her Masters of Science in Physiotherapy from Queen’s University. She has years of experience in strength and conditioning, training varsity-level athletes, youth athletes, community members, and individuals with disabilities.
